A man suspected of a shooting spree in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, has been detained, according to the RFE/RL Armenian service.
In a statement, the Armenian Interior Ministry said the suspect -- whose name was only given as Gor A. -- was arrested Sunday, May 18.
The statement said the suspect turned in a Makarov pistol he said he had used.
The Saturday shooting near Vernissage open-air market left 5 injured. Norayr Harutyunyan and Valery Hovhannisyan, both aged 30; Myasnik Hayrapetyan, 26; Albina Badalyan 64 and Mnatsakan Sukiasyan 72, underwent surgeries in the Yerevan’s Heratsi Hospital No. 1 and their lives are not threatened.
A criminal case has been instigated under Articles 235.1 and 258.4 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. An investigation is underway.
RFE/RL quoted sources as saying the suspect is Gor Arakelyan, the 29-year-old son-in-law of Karo Karapetyan, a lawmaker representing the Prosperous Armenia party in parliament.
