Google's Android L to be released for older Nexus products

Google's upcoming Android L operating system will be released for older Nexus products, including the Nexus 4 and the original Nexus 7, Digital Spy said.

The web giant has released source code for the devices, allowing developers to install an early build of the software on them.

Google distributed source code for the latest edition of the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 5 at its I/O convention, leading to speculation about whether older hardware will be supported.

It is yet to be confirmed whether the Samsung Galaxy Nexus or the Nexus S will run Android L, but devices from the Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread eras are unlikely to be compatible.

Meanwhile, Google recently confirmed that it is working on a new Nexus device amid rumours that the brand is being dropped in favour of Android Silver.

The final build of Android L is expected to be released to consumers in September or October.
