Samsung to stop making plasma TVs by yearend

Samsung has revealed that it will stop making plasma television sets by the end of 2014, Digital Spy reported.

Plasma displays have been in steady decline in recent years, due to the cheap production of LED LCD displays.

The South Korean manufacturer will shut down production of plasma televisions on November 30, following Panasonic, who gave up on the format last December.

In a statement to CNET, Samsung said it will now focus on growing production of its UHD and curved television lines instead.

"We plan to continue our PDP TV business until the end of this year, due to changes in market demands," the company said.

"We remain committed to providing consumers with products that meet their needs, and will increase our focus on growth opportunities in UHD TVs and curved TVs."

Samsung's last plasma line was the F8500, which received largely positive reviews.

LG is one of the few remaining companies still producing plasma televisions, but will likely follow suit in favour of 4K.
