Armenian, Russian parliament speakers talk EEU, Genocide

Chairman of the Russian State Duma Sergey Naryshkin hailed the development of interparliamentary ties with Armenia at the meeting with the National Assembly Speaker Galust Sahakyan, Aysor.am said citing the parliamentary press service.

Naryshkin said Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) will give impetus to the development and expansion of trade and economic links between the countries. He also underlined the importance of deepening cooperation in the international arena.

“The level of inter-parliamentary cooperation has considerably increased in recent years, while meetings at different levels and in various formats provide a new stimulus and create ample opportunities to boost inter-parliamentary cooperation,” Sahakyan said for his part.

According to the speaker, Armenia’s EEU membership will provide new mutually beneficial opportunities for all the member states of the union.

Sahakyan further commented on the Armenian Genocide centenary to be marked in 2015.

“This heinous crime must be recognized and condemned by the international community, which is crucial for the prevention of gravest crimes against humanity,” Sahakyan said.

According to him, an international conference entitled Parliamentarians against the Genocide is scheduled to take place in Yerevan on April 24, 2015. Galust Sahakyan invited a delegation of the State Duma and Naryshkin to the event.

Sahakyan endorsed the idea that the facts related to the 1915 Armenian Genocide should be included in history books, to be covered on the same level with fascism.
