LG has made a breakthrough in flexible OLED display technology, showcasing a television panel that can be rolled up like a projector screen, Digital Spy reported.

The 18-inch screen, which has a 1200 x 810 resolution, is capable of displaying imagery even when folded up to a radius of 3cm.

LG claims that it has the technology to bring a 50-inch version of the foldable display to market, but is yet to announce plans to make it commercially available.

The South Korean firm has also shown off a transparent display that remains see-through when switched off, technology that could pave the way for windows that double as TV sets.

Transparent displays are nothing new, but most existing models suffer from 10% transmittance, while LG's offering reduces this figure to 2% for a clearer picture.

"LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology," said In-Byung Kang, senior VP and head of the R&D Centre at LG Display.

"We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40% and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market."

Flexible OLED technology will also impact on the tablet and smartphone markets, with LG and Samsung pioneering research into its application in this sector.
