President hails prospects of Armenian-Chilean ties

President Serzh Sargsyan met with his Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet during his official visit to the country, with strengthening of bilateral ties in a number of sectors discussed, presidential press service reported.

The importance of forming a legal field between the two countries was stressed in opening new prospects for political, trade and economic cooperation. In this context, Sargsyan welcomed the 1st Armenian-Chilean business forum, where Armenian entrepreneurs were familiarized with the possibilities of establishing business contacts with Chile.

The Armenian President hailed Chile’s official recognition of the Genocide in 2007 as a proof of similarity in the two country’s approaches on major humanitarian issues, with Chile gaining the deepest respect of the Armenians worldwide as a sincere and reliable friend.

A memorandum of understanding between the two leaders was inked, with the ceremony followed by an official dinner.

Earlier, the Armenian President laid a wreath at the monument to the National Hero of Chile General Bernardo O'Higgins and paid tribute to his memory.

A meeting with the President of the House of Deputies of the National Congress of Chile Aldo Cornejo González was also on the Armenian leader’s agenda.

During the meeting, the MPs’ role in the strengthening of interstate ties between the two countries was stressed as well as the need to develop interparliamentary collaboration to promote trade, economic, and cultural ties between Armenia and Chile.
