Kyoto International Movie Festival 1st edition to launch in October

The Kyoto International Movie Festival has set dates in October for its inaugural edition.

The festival, which will actually span cinema, art, theater performances, traditional crafts and fusions, will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 – Sunday, Oct. 19.

There will be two awards in the film category, the pre-existing Shozo Makino Award, awarded since 1958 by the city of Kyoto, and newly initiated Toshiro Mifune Award. Classic films and films set in in Kyoto will get screening pride of place.

The new festival is actually a revival of the Kyoto Movie Festival, which was held every two years from 1997 to 2012.

The revived event, however, is backed by Yoshimoto Kogyo, the long-established talent agency, which has ventured into film production and also backs the annual Okinawa Film Festival in March.

Yoshimoto unveiled initial plans for the revival in November last year.
