Facebook "wants virtual reality movies on Oculus Rift"

Facebook is reportedly holding talks with Hollywood studios and directors with the aim of bringing custom-made virtual reality movies to its Oculus Rift headset.

The social network is approaching Fox, Disney, Warner Bros, Sony and Universal to realize these ambitions, Digital Spy reveals citing The Information.

The report claims that the project could result in the production of companion content for features, as well as full-length cinematic content for the device.

Facebook's efforts to secure exclusive movie content for Oculus Rift are said to be an attempt to prevent the gadget from being restricted to the gaming industry.

The firm's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously touted the headset as a "mass communication tool", promoting speculation that Facebook is planning to create an immersive social network based around virtual reality.

New Oculus Rift development kits were distributed last month as the product edges closer to its consumer launch.
