Spain picks up over 500 migrants in 23 boats from North Africa

The Spanish sea rescue service said it picked up more than 500 migrants trying to enter Spain clandestinely by crossing the Strait of Gibraltar in boats from north Africa over the past two days, the Associated Press reported.

A spokesman said 232 migrants were intercepted early Tuesday, Aug 12, traveling in 23 boats. On Monday, the service intercepted 299 migrants in 29 boats.

Hundreds of migrants regularly try to enter Spain from North Africa by land or sea in a bid to reach Europe in search of a better life.

The migrants were taken to the southern port of Tarifa for medical attention. All were said to be in good health.
