“The Maze Runner” YA dystopian thriller unveils new clips

The next YA dystopian thriller is on its way, and this time it's “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O'Brien at the center of the action. “The Maze Runner” is based on the first book in a trilogy by James Dashnar. 20th Century Fox has released a few clips from the film, hinting at the dark world the protagonist finds himself in.

O'Brien portrays Thomas — and his name is actually all he knows about himself. He awakens with a group of boys in a Glade surrounded by a massive and dangerous maze. Each night the doors to the maze close to protect the boys from nasty creatures that live within it.

While O'Brien has become well known for his portrayal of Stiles on “Teen Wolf,” this role appears to be much more dramatic. Stiles has his moments where he shines, but he's largely comic relief on the angsty MTV drama. Here, he's deadly serious.

The first clip, offers a hint at the dangers that lurk within the maze, as the other Gladers fight to keep O'Brien's character from going in. It appears to be early in the film, as he's just looking for a way out, indicating that he's freshly arrived at the Glade and has lots of questions.

As the second clip makes clear, he doesn't do a very good job at making friends among the other boys, but by the third clip he appears to have taken some kind of leadership role. He proves his commitment to the group when he risks his own life to try and help two boys he doesn't really know.

“The Maze Runner” costars Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter, Jacob Latimore, Kaya Scodelario, and Patricia Clarkson. It was directed by Wes Ball from a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim. Produced by Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Ellen Goldsmith-Van and Lee Stollman, 20th Century Fox will release the film to theaters on Friday, Sept. 19.
