Luc Besson's female-powered action film Lucy crossed the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office over the weekend, racing past the $100 million mark internationally, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The movie, starring Scarlett Johansson, opened in a raft of new markets, including a $5.2 million, No. 1 launch in the U.K. and Ireland. It also opened No. 1 in Spain ($5.3 million). Lucy's North American total is now $113.8 million. Internationally, where it has 22 markets left to open, Lucy has earned $103 million.

Another female property, Maleficent, also made news as it passed up X-Men: Days of Future Past ($744.7 million) to become the No. 2 title of the year so far at the global box office. The live-action fairy tale, starring Angelina Jolie, finished the weekend with $747.6 million in total worldwide ticket sales.

Transformers: Age of Extinction remains the year's leader with $1.065 billion.

Disney and Marvel Studios' offbeat superhero tentpole Guardians of the Galaxy once again topped the weekend worldwide chart with $38.3 million as it approached the $500 million threshold. In North America, it is now the top-grossing film of the summer.

Among new offerings, Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For languished in its North American debut ($6.5 million) but nabbed a No. 1 finish in Russia with an estimated $4.5 million.
