Microsoft to kill of MSN Messenger in October

Microsoft has announced that it is shutting down its MSN Messenger platform entirely in October, Digital Spy reported.

Also known as Windows Live Messenger, the service was retired in most counties more than a year ago, but has remained active and popular in China.

However, Microsoft has now contacted Messenger users in China via Hotmail to inform them that the programme will no longer be supported from October 31.

MSN Messenger launched in 1999 to rival AOL's AIM service, with Microsoft adding various features over the years, including custom emoticons and online gaming.

Microsoft made Skype its default communication tool after acquiring the telecommunications service in May 2011.

The firm began shifting Messenger users over to Skype last year.
