Samsung's Gear VR headset will allegedly be priced at $200, according to Digital Spy.

Tech website VentureBeat claims to have received word about the virtual reality headset's launch price from a Samsung representative at New York Fashion Week.

The Samsung Gear VR is not a standalone piece of hardware, requiring a Galaxy Note 4 or Note Edge to function, turning the device's user interface into a virtual reality experience.

A Google Glass-style touch pad on the side of the Gear VR serves as its controls, while a slider resides on the top so users can adjust the imagery based on their eyesight.

Powered by some of the same technology behind Oculus Rift, the headset will launch with around 100 compatible applications.

Samsung is yet to announce a release date or officially confirm the rumoured price tag for the Gear VR.
