Scarlett Johansson’s “Lucy” opens at No. 1 in China

Scarlett Johansson’s “Lucy” capped a muscular overseas box-office run with a $19 million No. 1 opening in China this weekend, TheWrap said.

That brings the international total for the Luc Besson sci-fi thriller about a woman with a megabrain to more than $307 million, and its worldwide haul to $434 million. Universal and Besson's EuropaCorp split the foreign distribution.

Writer-director Besson's home country France has been the most lucrative foreign market for “Lucy,” which has grossed more than $44 million there. The U.K. ($23.5 million) and Russia ($21.3 million) have also been hot spots.

The weekend's leading overseas earner was Warner Bros.’ “Annabelle,” which brought in $29.8 million from 63 markets.

That lifted the international total for the demon doll tale with the $6.5 million production budget to nearly $127 million, and its worldwide haul to more than $206 million.

Fox's “Gone Girl” was next, with $18.4 million from 60 markets. That means the Ben Affleck murder mystery directed by David Fincher has taken in more than $118 million overseas and $242 million globally.
