“Matrix” helmers’ “Jupiter Ascending” to debut at secret Sundance screening

“Jupiter Ascending”, the tentpole space opera from the Wachowski siblings, will debut at the Sundance Film Festival on Tuesday night as this year’s “secret screening,” Variety has learned.

Warner Bros., the studio behind the costly science-fiction adventure, declined to comment. But multiple sources confirm that the film will show for the first time at the evening event.

The festival’s secret screening is not, however, considered the formal premiere. Neither the film’s directors, Andy and Lana Wachowski, nor its star Channing Tatum are coming to Park City, according to people familiar with the matter.

“Jupiter Ascending” was originally supposed to open this past July, Warner Bros. pushed back the release date to Feb. 6 to continue working on the movie. There’s been almost no advance press on the film.

Last year, Sundance unveiled “Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1″ as its secret screening. But journalists received invitations to attend, since the film had previously opened overseas. This year’s secret screening isn’t listed anywhere in the Sundance schedule, and critics haven’t been invited.

The secret screening was programmed by the Sundance Film Festival.
