Samuel Goldwyn nabs foreign Oscar-nommed “Tangerines”

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to “Tangerines” the Estonian-Georgian drama nominated for the Academy Award for foreign-language film, Variety reports.

Goldwyn is planning to release the film this year.

Directed by Zaza Urushadze, “Tangerines” centers on an older Estonian man who cares for two wounded soldiers from opposite sides of the 1990s-era war in Georgia.

“Tangerines” is produced by Estonian film production company Allfilm and Georgian production company Cinema 24. Producers are Ivo Felt and Urushadze. The cast includes Lembit Ulfsak, Elmo Nuganen, Mikhail Meskhi, Giorgi Nakashidze, Raivo Trass and Zurab Bealishvili.

The film has won awards at the Warsaw, Mannheim-Heidelberg, Palm Springs and Seattle film festivals.

The deal was negotiated by Ian Puente of Samuel Goldwyn Films and Nick Stiliadis of Cinemavault, on behalf of the filmmakers.
