Sony developing “Sniper Elite” thriller from “American Sniper” author

Sony Pictures is developing the thriller “Sniper Elite”, based on the trilogy of novels by “American Sniper” co-author Scott McEwen and Thomas Koloniar, Variety reports.

Action specialist Jaume Collet-Serra is attached to direct from an adapted script by Sheldon Turner. Producers are Kevin Misher, Jennifer Klein, Collet-Serra and his partner Juan Sola through their Ombra Films company.

Producers are developing “Target America: A Sniper Elite Novel,” centering on an unofficial team of former Special Forces operatives seeking to stop Chechen terrorists who smuggle a Russian nuke across the Mexican-American border. The key character is Navy SEAL Gil Shannon.

McEwen teamed with Jim DeFelice on Chris Kyle’s 2012 memoir “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History.”

Warner Bros.’ “American Sniper” had reached $310 million in domestic box office as of Thursday.

Spanish native Collet-Serra has directed three Liam Neeson films: 2011’s “Unknown,” last year’s “Non-Stop” and the upcoming “Run All Night.”
