Android “coming to virtual reality headsets”

Google is reportedly adapting Android to work on virtual-reality headsets, Digital Spy reveals.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the web giant has already got tens of engineers working on the project.

The platform will be available freely, in a similar fashion to Android on smartphones, tablets and wearables.

Clay Bavor and Jeremy Doig - who spearheaded Google Cardboard - are apparently leading Android VR.

The move comes amid growing interest in virtual reality, which dominated the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week.

Android VR will have to contend with several big players in the market, including Facebook's Oculus VR and Samsung Gear VR.
