Aeromobil has pledged to launch a line of flying cars within the next two years, Digital Spy reports.

The Slovakian manufacturer announced at this weekend's SXSW that the autonomous crafts will be available to buy and fly legally by 2017.

The firm is currently in talks with the European Union to secure the regulatory backing it requires to get the vehicles on the roads and in the air.

Aeromobil's flying cars seat two people and have a 430-mile range, powered by Garmin avionics backed up by two-axis autopilot.

As the vehicles are capable of landing on grass, eco-friendly landing strips will be constructed beside roads to allow pilots to rejoin traffic or takeoff.

The initial model of the car will be geared towards wealthy hobbyists, but Aeromobil has plans to launch a mass-market version in the future.

As the crafts are autonomous, it is unclear whether drivers would require some form of aviation training to operate them.
