Amy Winehouse documentary release date set

Asif Kapadia's documentary about Amy Winehouse will be released in UK cinemas this summer, according to Digital Spy.

Amy, which reunites the team behind the BAFTA Award-winning Senna, will open on July 3 through Altitude Films.

The documentary will use previously-unseen archive footage and unheard tracks to tell Winehouse's story in her own words.

Universal Music UK CEO David Joseph said of the film earlier this year: "About two years ago we decided to make a movie about her - her career and her life. It's a very complicated and tender movie.

"It tackles lots of things about family and media, fame, addiction, but most importantly, it captures the very heart of what she was about, which is an amazing person and a true musical genius."

Winehouse rose to fame with her 2003 debut album Frank, which earned her a Mercury Prize nomination. Her 2006 follow-up Back to Black featured the hit single 'Rehab' and won Winehouse five Grammys in 2008.

Winehouse battled drug and alcohol problems, and her turbulent personal life made her a frequent tabloid target.

She passed away from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.
