"Little Women" Louisa May Alcott novel adaptation remake in the works

Away from Her writer Sarah Polley will oversee a new film version of Little Women, Digital Spy reports.

The 1868 Louisa May Alcott novel has been adapted for the screen on numerous occasions, most recently in a film starring Winona Ryder and Kirsten Dunst in 1994.

Little Women chronicles the trials and tribulations of four sisters growing up in the post-U.S. Civil War era.

Polley's film version of the classic family drama will be produced by former Sony executive Amy Pascal as part of her new partnership with the production company, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Polley first rose to prominence as an actress in Last Night, The Weight of Water and Dawn of the Dead, while simultaneously moving into writing and directing.

Her Alzheimer's disease drama Away from Her earned two Academy Award nominations in 2007.

Polley most recently directed the 2012 documentary Stories We Tell about a shocking secret within her own family.
