Smartphone Google searches outnumber desktop ones

An increasing number of Google searches are now coming from smartphones instead of computers, Digital Spy reports.

The web giant has revealed that it actually receives more searches from mobile devices than PCs in ten countries.

For the moment, Google has only cited the US and Japan as two of the countries using mobile devices more to search - it's also important to note that the report only applies to smartphones, not tablets as well.

The searches in question include both those on a browser and those from the Google app, according Search Engine Land.

And Google hopes to capitalise on the shift by developing new ad formats optimised for smartphones.

"Billions of times per day, consumers turn to Google for I want-to-know, I want-to-go, and I want-to-buy moments," Google vice president Jerry Dischler said.

"And at these times, consumers are increasingly picking up their smartphones for answers."

The news comes as no surprise given that smartphones - and tablets - have been eating into the PC market for sometime now.
