PM says govt. ready to provide accommodation for Aleppo children

The Armenian Government has responded to the urges of Syrian-Armenians to transport children from Syria to Armenia to escape the dangers of war. As Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan said during Thursday, May 7 executive meeting, Armenia is ready to create necessary conditions to assure the children’s safety, Armenia Now reports.

News about Armenian districts of Aleppo being bombed again during the last month created concerns about the four-year long Syrian conflict.

On Wednesday, Aleppo Patriotic Charity Organization announced that many Armenians from Aleppo requested the organization for help in purchasing one-way tickets to Armenia.

According to the organization, a one-way ticket costs about $488. The organization is accepting on-line and bank transfer donations.

At the government meeting on Thursday, Abrahamyan said that days ago he addressed the topic of bombing in the Suleymaniye district in Aleppo which resulted in Armenian deaths.

“We had an alert about moving children and schoolchildren out of the war zone, to which I responded noting that the government is ready to properly accept and provide necessary conditions for children moving from Aleppo to Armenia,” Abrahamyan said and ordered the bodies in charge to provide detailed information about the situation at the next meeting.

Despite grave conditions, there is an opinion that Armenians should not be transported from Syria altogether, against concerns that the historic center of Armenian culture and language would be lost.
