FIFA executive committee to choose election date for Blatter replacement

FIFA President Sepp Blatter will chair an executive committee meeting next month to choose a date for an election to replace him, the Associated Press reports.

FIFA says the executive committee will meet "in July, the precise date to be confirmed within this week."

That meeting "needs to confirm a date and agenda for the extraordinary elective Congress." FIFA says there are "various date options" for the election.

When Blatter announced his resignation plan last week, he said his successor would be elected between December and March.

FIFA rules require an election to be held four months after the deadline for prospective candidates to apply. Would-be candidates need to be nominated by five of FIFA's 209 member federations who vote in the election.
