Byurakan Observatory named regional center of astronomy

The International Astronomical Union ruled to declare Armenia’s Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory a regional center of astronomy, Armenian media reports.

Following the ruling, Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences, which owns and operates the observatory, plans to draft a strategic plan for the observatory located on the slopes of Mt. Aragats.

The only observatory on the territory of Armenia, the institution has also been included in an interstate innovation cooperation program for the Commonwealth of Independent States.
