Google Maps update comes with night mode navigation for iOS

Google's latest Maps for iOS update comes with night mode navigation, PCMag reports.

The app now automatically switches to a darker color scheme when providing directions at night.

Drivers obviously should not be interacting hands-on with the app while driving, especially in the dark. But the change is aimed at reducing eye strain as motorists flick between the road and their smartphone, or navigate city streets on foot, PCMag says.

It only works when using the turn-by-turn directions on the app, and it is based on the time of day rather than light. The update also includes the ability to label places and see them on the map and in search suggestions.

Users can already set locations like "Home" and "Work," and the app allows saving specific addresses. They can also edit posted photo captions.

Last month, Google added the ability for PC users to beam directions from the desktop to their phone. The new feature requires users to be signed into Google Maps with the same account on a computer and mobile device.
