Parliamentary hearings on draft of the new Constitution due Sept 4

The Armenian parliament will hold hearings on the draft of the new Constitution on September 4, the National Assembly deputy speaker said.

As Edward Sharmazanov told reporters on August 27, representatives of political parties, civil initiatives, and ethnic minorities will be invited to the hearings organized by the Armenian parliament’s standing committee on state and legal affairs, Panorama.am reports.

“We look forward to heated, efficient, and healthy debates in line with the Constitution,” Sharmazanov said.

On August 21, President Serzh Sargsyan submitted the draft amendments to the Constitution to the National Assembly. The draft amendments had been developed by the Commission on Constitutional Reforms under Armenian President. This week, President Sargsyan is holding consultations with representatives of political parties regarding the approaches stated in the draft Constitution. The Armenian leader also instructed the Commission to continue the dialog with the Venice Commission (VC) over the issues indicated in the VC’s preliminary opinion for which no agreed solutions have been found so far.
