The Irish Film & Television Academy has selected “Viva” as Ireland’s submission for the foreign language category at the Academy Awards, Variety reports.

The film, directed by Paddy Breathnach from a script by Mark O’Halloran, is produced by Rebecca O’Flanagan and Rob Walpole of Treasure Films and executive produced by Benicio Del Toro. “Viva” had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.

The film is set in Havana and tells the story of an 18-year-old Cuban struggling to realize his true identity. He works at a local Havana drag club, where he dreams of becoming a performer, when his long-lost father is released from a 15-year prison term. The project is supported by the Irish Film Board, Windmill Lane Pictures, RTÉ and Treasure Entertainment. The film was shot in Havana and Ireland.

The deadline to submit entries for foreign language film is Oct. 1. The nominations will be announced Jan. 16 and the Oscars will take place Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
