Google to unveil next-gen Chromecast late September

Upgrading your media streaming hardware seems to be in fashion right now, and Google is rumoured to be the latest company to get in on the act, Digital Spy reports.

The Android firm is launching a next-generation version of its Chromecast dongle later this month, according to 9to5Google's sources.

The revamped HDMI stick is expected to include improved WiFi, support for content feeds, and new features called 'Fast Play' and 'Chromecast Audio'.

Chromecast Audio is rumoured to allow users to plug their device directly into any speaker system via an auxiliary port for multi-room playback, while Fast Play is expected to facilitate speedier connections and content access.

The device will face steep competition from Amazon's new Fire TV Stick as well as the Apple TV revamp, although it should serve as a cheaper alternative to the latter.

Google is yet to announce the next-gen Chromecast, but has a product unveiling scheduled for September 29, where it could emerge.
