Skype experiencing issues worldwide

If you're wondering why you can't make calls or update your status on Skype today (September 21), wonder no more - the service is experiencing technical difficulties around the world, Digital Spy reports.

Microsoft-owned Skype has acknowledged the issues on Twitter and its official support page, and is hard at work on a fix.

Until then, some users of the Skype apps might notice that all of their contacts appear offline, whether they're logged in or not, but instant messaging is unaffected.

"We have detected an issue that is affecting Skype in a number of ways," said the Skype team in a blog post.

"If you're signed in to Skype, you will not be able to change your status and your contacts will all show as offline even if they are online. As a result, you won't be able to start Skype calls to them.

"A small number of messages to group chats are not being delivered, but in most cases you can still instant message your contacts."

Skype also notes that some users may experience difficulty signing in, while others might notice that changes to their profile take a while to show up.

The web-based version of Skype does not appear to be affected.
