Russia’s Gazprom may switch to gas trading in ruble

Gazprom may include possible settlements in rubles in its new export contracts, Rg.ru reports.

The issue, in particular, will be addressed at a September 28 board meeting that will also focus on a reasonable minimum share of ruble settlements.

As Gazprom Export General Director, Elena Burmistrov noted earlier in June, the Russian company and the Chinese CNPC considered the ruble and the yuan as possible currency options for gas supply payments. According to her, at the time the companies hadn’t yet decided on the currency of payment for gas supply through the western route.

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan suggested at the Eurasian Economic Union’s Intergovernmental Council in Grodno that EEU member states use the ruble for payments. According to the PM, that would reduce dependence on the dollar.
