Joseph Gordon-Levitt-starring “Snowden” release date moved

Open Road Films pushed the release date of director Oliver Stone‘s “Snowden” to May 13, 2016, according to TheWrap.

The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, the U.S. government whistle-blower who is facing espionage charges after leaking classified government documents and information to the media. Shailene Woodley also stars.

The film’s release was pushed off Christmas Day — and out of the Oscar race — by Open Road last month.

The only film currently set to be released widely on May 16 is Paramount’s “Friday the 13.”

Movies about Snowden and international hacktivism have had a mixed track record at the box office.

The Laura Poitras-directed documentary “Citizen Four” won an Oscar last year, but “The Fifth Estate,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange, flopped for Disney in 2013.
