Oscar Winner Kate Winslet to portray iconic photographer Lee Miller

Kate Winslet is going from one real-life role to another. The Academy Award-winning actress, who plays Apple marketing whiz Joanna Hoffman in Danny Boyle’s awards contender Steve Jobs, now will portray American fashion model, artist and war correspondent Elizabeth "Lee" Miller in an untitled screen story about the woman, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Troy Lum and Andrew Mason of Hopscotch Features are producing the drama, which is based on the biography The Lives of Lee Miller, written by Miller's son, Antony Penrose. Hopscotch has optioned the rights to the book, and the producers have obtained exclusive access to the Lee Miller Archives, which are curated and managed by Penrose and include all of Miller’s photos and diaries.

The project is still in development and has no writer or director.

Miller led a packed life, becoming a model as a teen then the muse and lover to artist Man Ray, moving in circles that included Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau. She became an art photographer, but during World War II became a pre-eminent war photographer for Vogue.

Hopscotch was behind indie film Adore, which starred Naomi Watts and Robin Wright, and produced Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks. Its most recent production was The Water Diviner, which starred and was directed by Russell Crowe.

Winslet is a six-time Oscar nominee, winning for her work in 2008’s The Reader. Recently she has been playing the villain in Lionsgate’s Insurgent movies, and she is part of the ensemble cast of the upcoming crime thriller Triple 9.

Steve Jobs, which already is generating considerable awards buzz, expands to several markets this Friday and then goes wide Oct. 23.
