U.S. calls for open debate over Armenia’s constitutional referendum

Washington calls on the Armenian authorities to hold open and transparent debate over constitutional amendments, giving the parties equal opportunities, U.S. ambassador to Armenia said on Friday, October 23.

According to Richard Mills, the U.S. position is as follows: the Armenian people must decide whether or not the country needs to change the Constitution, and if yes, then how to do it.

“As Armenia’s friend, the United States believes that such a decision should be made only after open debate. The society should have the opportunity to ask questions, voice their concerns, so that people can make an informed decision,” Mills said.

Taking part in an event organized by the OSCE Yerevan Office, Mills said the discussions are on in the expert community and “need to be expanded.”
