Apple Watch 2 “to feature 2nd screen in its strap”

The Apple Watch 2 could be set for a radical second-screen overhaul, with the wearable tipped to adopt an additional, strap-based display, Digital Spy reports.

That's according to newly surfaced patents submitted by the iPhone 6S and iPad Pro maker.

In the designs submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, the Cupertino-based company has shown how it intends to fill its future Watch bands with light-transmitting fibres.

Weaved into the traditional materials used, these would allow the wrist band to double as an additional display, offering users more glancable access to message alerts and notifications.

These "Woven Displays" won't be limited to future Apple Watch straps either. Apple's patent filing has shown the material doubling as iPhone and iPad cables and wrist-straps.

With the patent having been filed back on May 30, 2014, it would appear that Apple is pretty far along with the development of the second-screen watch straps.
