Six years ago, "House of Cards" creator David Fincher and actress Charlize Theron optioned a 1996 book titled "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit", written by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. On Tuesday, December 21, it was announced that Netflix has picked it up to series, AceShowbiz reports.
The project was originally set up at HBO with "Dexter" showrunner Scott Buck penning the script. However, Buck is not involved in the new incarnation and "The Road" scribe Joe Penhall is brought in instead. Fincher and Theron are on board as executive producers for the project now called "Mindhunter". Fincher is set to direct.
The book follows Douglas' experience in pursuing the most notorious serial killers and rapists. Some of his highest-profiled cases such as the man who hunted prostitutes in Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer and Seattle's Green River killer are featured in the book. Developing profiling techniques to catch them, Douglas interviewed and studied a skew of serial killers.
