“Mummy” reboot delayed, Tom Cruise confirmed as new male lead

"The Mummy" remake has got a new release date from Universal. The movie is moved back several months from the original March 24, 2017 release to June 9 the same year. It's pitted against "World War Z 2" and "The Divergent Series: Ascendant", AceShowbiz reports.

Tom Cruise is officially announced to play the main hero. He is confirmed to star opposite Sofia Boutella ("Kingsman: The Secret Service"). Their roles are still unclear but the film is rumored to have a female mummy as a villain and center on an ex-Navy Seal who stumbles into an old tomb.

"The Mummy" is one of the many remakes planned by Universal as an effort to create an interconnected universe for their classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein, and vampire hunter Van Helsing.

Alex Kurtzman is set to direct the "Mummy" reboot from a screenplay by Jon Spaights ("Prometheus"). Alex is also attached to oversee the creative team creating the new Monster franchise.
