Digital-media company Refinery29 is launching ShatterBox Anthology, a short-film series dedicated to emerging female filmmakers, with Chloe Sevigny’s directorial debut “Kitty” headlining the new effort, Variety reports.

Refinery29 announced the series at the Sundance Film Festival. ShatterBox, which it is producing with creative support from Sundance Institute, is set to comprise 12 shorts from women directors, writers and animators. The series will run monthly on Refinery29, a femme-focused lifestyle brand, beginning this spring.

Sevigny’s “Kitty,” adapted from Paul Bowles’ short story of the same name, follows a little girl who dreams of becoming a kitten and finds herself transformed into one. The short film stars Ione Skye (“Say Anything,” “Arrested Development”) and Lee Meriwether (“Barnaby Jones”). Seamus McGarvey (“Atonement,” “The Avengers”) is cinematographer. The film is produced by Christina Piovesan of First Generation Films, and Lizzie Nastro, in collaboration with executive producers Tidal and Refinery29.

In addition, independent producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler — whose credits include “Carol,” “Still Alice” and “Boys Don’t Cry” — will support the ShatterBox Anthology program in advisory roles. Vachon and Koffler will help Refinery29 identify talent to write and direct projects for the program.

“Refinery29 has long been committed to presenting content created by women, for women, and broaching topics otherwise considered taboo,” said Amy Emmerich, Refinery29’s chief content officer. “By tackling the dynamics of power, we are forcing society to look at the social structures that shape our lives.” She added, “There is no reason to believe that one of these 12 short films won’t be at the Oscars in 2017.”

Caroline Libresco, Sundance Film Festival senior programmer and director of women at Sundance and Catalyst Sundance, applauded Refinery29’s ShatterBox initiative.

“Each year the Sundance Film Festival showcases visionary new stories from emerging and established female filmmakers, and we work year-round to get these and other filmmakers’ work made and seen,” Libresco said in a statement. “We are grateful to Refinery29 for their support of our programs, and we look forward to seeing the impact their ShatterBox Anthology will have on this issue.”

Refinery29’s lineup of original programming already includes several female-led productions. Those include “The Skinny” from Jessie Kahnweiler in collaboration with Jill Soloway, Andrea Sperling and Rebecca Odes of Wifey.TV, which is premiering at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival; “A Woman’s Place: The Frontlines of Feminism,” a docu-series created in partnership with We Are the XX co-founders Kassidy Brown and Allison Rapson and exec produced by Lauren Zalaznick; and “Her Shorts,” a series of short films created in partnership with Planned Parenthood focusing on reproductive and sexual-health issues.
