Award-winning “Gravity” scribe to write, direct new Zorro movie

Jonas Cuarón, the award-winning writer of “Gravity”, is set to write and direct a new Zorro movie titled “Z” for producers Lantica Media and Sobini Films, the companies announced Thursday, February 4, according to TheWrap.

Details of the project are being kept under wraps, though it will present a fresh take on the legendary Latin hero, known for his black mask and sword-signature.

Veteran producer Mark Amin, whose credits include the upcoming Sony Classics release “Miles Ahead,” will produce the film, while Albert Martinez Martin will oversee production for Lantica. Cami Winikoff and David W. Higgins are set to executive produce on behalf of Sobini.

Lantica Media will finance the film, which is slated to start production this summer at the Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios. Pantelion Films will handle international sales.

Cuarón recently wrote and directed the Gael Garcia Bernal-Jeffrey Dean Morgan thriller “Desierto,” which won the International Critics Award at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, and is slated for release this spring by STX.

“When I saw ‘Desierto,’ I was impressed with Jonás’ command of action and suspense, his great visual eye, and the strong performances he elicited from his actors,” Sobini Films CEO Amin said.

“We are very fortunate to have Jonás on this film,” Lantica Media CEO Antonio Gennari added. “His love of cinema is evident in his work and he is very talented in his ability to tell a compelling story. We look forward to seeing where his vision will take us.”
