France introduces proposal for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks

Israeli and Palestinian officials said France has presented the two sides with a proposal for an international peace conference, the Associated Press reports.

France is preparing the conference to bring together the two parties and their American, European and Arab partners in order to revive the peace process. France says it will recognize a Palestinian state if its efforts fail.

Palestinian official Ahmad Majdalani said France presented general ideas but no specifics about its plan to revive peace efforts. He says the Palestinians support the French initiative.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said France's ambassador to Israel met with a ministry official on Tuesday. He declined to elaborate on details of the meeting or whether Israel would agree to participate.

American-brokered peace talks collapsed in 2014 and have been frozen since.
