Will Smith, David Ayer reteaming for “Bright”

With buzz riding high on their comic book pic “Suicide Squad,” director David Ayer and Will Smith are looking to reunite for their next project, Variety said.

Sources tell Variety they’re in talks to join the Max Landis spec script “Bright” with Ayer attached to direct and Smith on board to star. Warner Bros. is expected to be the project’s home, though no deal has been made yet as sources say Sony is also in the mix.

Joel Edgerton is also in talks to co-star.

Written on spec by Landis, plot details are unknown, but sources suggest the project will be in the vein of “End of Watch” (which was directed by Ayer) but set in a world where Orcs and fairies live among humans. Sources also say the story is not set in present day.

Landis recently tweeted glowing remarks about Ayer’s recent rewrite of the spec.

Ayer translating a whole script of mine into Ayer-sian is a huge, bizarre honor. Like reading the same script from an alternate dimension.

It’s unknown when the film would get underway but the hope is to get production rolling this year in order to get both Ayer and Smith ready for a “Suicide Squad” sequel shoot by 2017.

“Suicide Squad,” which also stars Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and Viola Davis, bows on Aug. 5. Landis most recently penned “American Ultra” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.
