Capping off the Isle Of Wight Festival 2016 will be returning veterans The Who - marking their only UK appearance of the year, Gigwise reports.

As well as announcing The Verve turned solo icon Richard Ashcroft as special guest, the 'Pinball Wizard' and 'My Generation' rock heroes will be back after first headlining in 1969 and then 1970 - which then became immortalised in Murray Lerner’s now legendary Message to Love documentary film.

They last topped the bill in 2004, which was also headlined by David Bowie for his last ever UK live appearance.

“The Who are part of the fabric of The Isle of Wight Festival, and it’s great to welcome them back to the island as part of their ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations," said festival boss John Giddings. "We’re proud to have a line up of home-grown headliners to help celebrate our own 15th anniversary and ensure that this year delivers yet another unforgettable weekend of music."

Ashcroft and The Who join Stereophonics and Faithless who co-headlining on Friday, while the Sunday headliner is Queen with Adam Lambert.

Elsewhere on the bill is 40 years of punk with Iggy Pop, Adam Ant, The Damned, Buzzcocks, The Cribs, The Kills, Ocean Colour Scene, Status Quo, Mike & The Mechanics, The Godfathers, and The Sex Pissed Dolls, plus Sigma, Jess Glynne, Pendulum (DJ set), Everything Everything, Blossoms, Sunset Sons, Feeder, Cast, Reef, Turin Brakes, Alabama 3, Joanne Shaw Taylor, The Second Sons, The Corrs, Busted, Twin Atlantic, Half Moon Run, Gabrielle Aplin, The High Kings, Reverend And The Makers, The Wonder Stuff, Sixx Am, Lissie, The Family Rain, and Bjorn Tagemose silent film experience Gutterdammerung.

The Isle Of Wight Festival takes place at Seaclose Park from 9-12 June, 2016.
