“Becoming Nicole” hit transgender novel to get series treatment

Freeform is developing “New People,” a drama series from writer Don Roos, who is executive producing with Joel Silver and Rodney Ferrell. Freeform has given a script order to the project, which is produced by Lionsgate Television and Silver’s shingle Silver Pictures, Variety reports.

The series is based on the novel “Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family,” which tells the story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother and their family.

The book was a New York Times best seller. It was named one of the 10 best books of the year by People and Men’s Journal magazines.

Roos is the writer and director of the film “The Opposite of Sex.” His other writing credits include the movies “The Other Woman,” “Marley & Me,” “Happy Endings” and “Bounce.”

Silver’s most recent feature film, “The Nice Guys,” which he produced for Warner Bros., stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling and is set to open May 20.
