Yerevan seeks to completely revamp public transport system: Mayor

Yerevan is currently negotiating with several international organizations for complete transformation of public transport sector, Mayor Taron Margaryan said in a Q&A session with the Armenian capital’s residents.

“The public transport system isn’t just in need of partial modifications or revisions, it requires complex changes,” the Mayor said. “Various solutions to regulate the issue will soon be developed, set to introduce a unified payment system for all types of public transport, a precise timetable and buses equipped with GPS systems, as well as public service regulations among other things.”

Commenting on a question about new subway stations, the official said the expansion of the metro system would be a great achievement, citing, however, the need for major investments.

Margaryan further noted that the city authorities have been negotiating with the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for modernization of Yerevan’s trolleybus system, with a feasibility study already ordered.
