Melissa McCarthy revealed Thursday, April 7 on Ellen that she will reprise her role as Sookie St. James in Netflix's forthcoming Gilmore Girls revival, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

"Literally about an hour and half ago we figured out that I’m gonna go back and do it and I am so excited. And they are gonna be amazing," McCarthy said on the daytime show. "[Creator] Amy Sherman-Palladino is going to squeeze me in to do it and I’m very happy to go back to Stars Hollow. Oh my gosh, there’s me and Lauren [Graham]. I’m just really excited about that. So it just happened and I got asked a lot about it, and as of not even two hours ago, it’s happening."

McCarthy starred on the series as Graham's character Lorelai's BFF for all seven seasons of the beloved family drama. However, questions immediately arose about whether she would be able to return for the four-part Netflix revival because of her busy film schedule, which includes The Boss, opening Friday, and the highly anticipated female Ghostbusters reboot.

Sherman-Palladino told TVLine in one of her first interviews about the revival that she was optimistic about getting McCarthy back even for just a brief appearance. "The thing I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us," Sherman-Palladino, who is co-writing and directing all four installments with her husband, Dan Palladino, said at the time. "If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out."

However, days later, McCarthy that she had not been asked back. "Sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow," the actress tweeted to a fan. "Wish them all the best!!"

In an interview with Howard Stern earlier this week, McCarthy admitted she was "surprised" she had not been asked to return. "I think they thought I was too busy, so, they literally didn't talk to me about it," she said. "But I'm glad they do it, because I get more questions about Gilmore. In every country, it's like, everybody asks about that show. Like, the fan base of that show is really remarkable."

Among the many returning guest stars, McCarthy will join her longtime TV husband, Jackson Douglas, who confirmed his return on Twitter shortly after the revival was officially announced by Netflix. A full list of returning castmembers can be found here.
