World's first Virtual Reality medical operation goes live

The world's first Virtual Reality medical operation is taking place on Thursday (April 14) – and you can tune in live, Digital Spy said.

Mativision and Medical Realities are teaming up with The Royal London Hospital to document every second of a procedure for a patient with colon cancer, in hopes of reaching developing nations.

Two 360-degree cameras will allow viewers to zoom in and out from various angles as Dr Shafi Ahmed performs his operation.

"As a champion of new technology in medicine, I believe that virtual and augmented reality can revolutionise surgical education and training, particularly for developing countries that don't have the resources and facilities of NHS hospital," Dr Ahmed told TechRadar.

This is the first of many planned VR operations, with future live streams expected to incorporate GGI and other interactive features.
