Nina Dobrev joins Ellen Page in “Flatliners” sci-fi thriller reboot

Nina Dobrev exited The Vampire Diaries last year after six seasons to tackle the big screen full-on, and the actress looks to have surgically scored. Dobrev is in talks to star in Sony’s reboot of the sci-fi medical thriller Flatliners opposite Ellen Page and Diego Luna, Deadline reports.

In the Niels Arden Oplev-helmed project based the 1990 film, the Bulgaria-born, Canada-raised actress will play Marlo, an overachiever who is the top of her class. Oplev, who directed the original Swedish Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, is directing from a screenplay by Ben Ripley. Michael Douglas and Laurence Mark are producing.

Opening with the line “today is a good day to die,” the original Flatliners featured Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon and focused on a group of medical students who conduct near-death experiments to travel into the afterworld to find greater meaning and hidden truths. Being a movie, things go wrong, and they get a lot more than they bargain for.

Dobrev is in production on Paramount’s XxX: The Return of Xander Cage opposite Vin Diesel. She wrapped recently on indie comedy Crash Pad, opposite Domhnall Gleeson, and is attached to star opposite Maisie Williams and Asa Butterfield in indie drama Arrivals, as Deadline exclusively reported in September.
