Samsung working on standalone VR headset

Samsung's Gear VR is far from the worst virtual reality headset around, but it does have one major flaw - you need a Samsung phone in order to use it, Digital Spy said.

However, Samsung has now revealed it's working on a standalone VR headset that won't require you to own one of the firm's wildly expensive handsets.

The headset hasn't been revealed yet, but Samsung has let slip some juicy details.

It'll offer positional tracking and possibly hand and gesture-tracking too, just like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. That means you'll be able to interact with your virtual environment, whereas the Gear VR only lets you look around.

Other than that, details are scarce.

"We are working on wireless and dedicated VR devices, not necessarily working with our mobile phone," Injong Rhee, Samsung's head of R&D for software and services, told Variety.

"VR is amazing, but the industry is still at its infancy."
