The 3rd Platino Ibero-American Film Awards will fete Argentine star Ricardo Darin with a Lifetime Achievement Prize during its July 24 awards ceremony at Uruguay’s Punta del Este, Variety reports.

Prior recipients of the honour are Brazilian actress Sonia Braga in 2014 and Antonio Banderas in 2015.

With this recognition, the Platino Awards‘ steering committee “aims to praise the honesty, talent and charisma with which (Darin) has brought stature to some of the most recognized Latin American films of the last three decades.”

The Buenos Aires-born thesp, one of Latin America biggest marquee draws, starred in Juan Jose Campanella’s 2010 Oscar-winning “The Secret in Their Eyes,” which Sony Pictures Classics distributed in the U.S., and also toplined Damian Szifron’s 2014 Cannes hit and Oscar-nominee “Wild Tales,” another Sony Pictures Classics pickup which grossed $44 million worldwide, a standout result for a Spanish-language movie.

The Platino Awards organizers highlighted Darin’s “acting versatility and undeniable ability to bring a sense of conviction and humanity to his characters,” working in a wide range of film genres, with further Darin titles taking in Fabian Bielinsky’s scam suspenser “Nine Queens,” Campanella’s Oscar-nominated comedy “The Son of the Bride,” Sebastian Borensztein’s cross-cultural comedy “Chinese Take-Away,” Eduardo Mignogna’s prison-break drama “The Escape” and Pablo Trapero’s noir thriller “Carancho.”

Exercising an recognised sense of taste in his choice of role, Darin’s association with a film has converted his name in one sign of a movie’s quality.

Darin will multi-task at the 3rd Platino Ibero-American Film Awards, where he is also representing Cesc Gay’s“Truman,” for which he has snagged a best actor nomination. The friendship drama has learnt him best actor plaudits at September’s San Sebastian festival, shared with Javier Camara, and at January’s Spanish Academy Goya Awards.

Organized by Spain’s Egeda producers’ rights collection society, with the collaboration of Fipca, the Ibero-American federation of film and audiovisual producers, the Platinos mark the most ambitious attempt to promote globally the Latin American film industry.

Leading the Platino Award nominations this year are Academy Award-nominated “Embrace of the Serpent,” from Colombia’s Ciro Guerra, and Berlin Festival winner “Ixcanul,” directed by Nicaragua’s Jayro Bustamante. In total, 26 nominated movies have been whittled down from 826 movies from Spain, Latin America and Portugal that gained a first theatrical release in the region or were screened by “A” list festivals or Toronto.
