If you're sick of your ordinary, road-based car holding back your aerial capabilities, help appears to be on the horizon. A recently granted patent has revealed that Toyota is looking to potentially expand its autos into the sky, with drawings showing a shape-shifting fuselage could be the futuristic means of travelling from A to B, Digital Spy reports.

The idea of the aerocar is that the vehicle's wings would be kept inside the body until ready for takeoff, with the sides then opening up and wings extending.

This would allow the flexible hybrid to contract for better flight aerodynamics, although there's no indication on whether you'd need around a mile of runway to allow for takeoff, Digital Spy said.

Called 'Shape morphine fuselage for an aerocar', the flying car patent was filed by the car manufacturer in 2014, meaning the early stages of development could already be under way.

“Although, if we're honest, this is likely just a move from the car company to get ahead of any competitors. Which is a true shame, because a flying Toyota Yaris - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang-style - is something we could all get behind,” Digital Spy said.
